variable strike zone

it is supposed to, but haven't you ever heard of or seen a pitcher who tests pitches to see what he can get away with because of the ump....Some umps call high strikes, some low...some give you the corner, etc.

ok, i understood.

The strike zone are they changing in consequences ? If the ump' allow hight strike, did the pitcher could see a upper zone or not (in this case he just know that he can throw ball on the top of the zone) ?

sorry if i'am not clear, i'am a frenchie :|

The displayed size of the strike zone does not change, it's just that once in a while the ump will call a strike on a ball clearly out of the strikezone...even on the "yellow X" ones. Conversely, balls that look to be strikes will occasionally be called balls. It's fairly realistic, though I haven't determined if it's totally random or if the same strikezone exists all game long...in real ball there are umps who will consistently give you the 'outside' strike, or the 'inside' strike...not sure about that in the game.

In my experience, the strike zone will stay equal for each game. When i realized that an ump is calling strikes balls that are ourside of the zone, i keep trhowing pitches there.

I agree with this. Although I have no emperical evidence...and perhaps it's because I want it to be so...but I can swear that I have noted that if the ump is giving me the outside corner for example, it stays that way all game.

1. ^^^^ Uncle Ray, please use the edit button..

2. I always thought variable strike zone meant it varies depending on the batter (stance etc..) Makes more sense to me anyway. If you have it off, the strike zone is always in the same place. I've had other players online say the same thing. We could be wrong though.

What H is talking about seems to me part of the "blown calls" feature, ie: the fact that mistake pitches or balls are called strikes etc..

MaddiesDaddy,

It works that way... and when you have the 'variable stuff' and the 'blown calls' settings turned ON, it is even more noticeable.

UncleRay,

Enough with your yapping about the game... if you don't like it, then move along and find something else to do.

Kamasutra,

Yeah, kind of.

Now, though the strike zone is described and presented as a constant and defined area above and across home plate, it NEVER remains the same, even in real life. Why? well, because of 2 factors:

1) The height of the batter and its stance (as you precisely point out).

2) The Ump's definition of it. Every single Ump has a different one and no matter how many rule books define it, it will always be whatever the Ump decides it will be.

I've seen the coloured squares shift left or right before. I've also seen pitches in the same location in the same game get called for a ball and a strike.

The shifting is due to the batter shifting in the batter's box

Hey UncleRay, out of your twenty something posts, you've managed to start two threads you had no business starting, and I've counted 5 posts that you could have just used the edit button...

What's up dude?

If you don't like the game, and all you're going to do is start fights here, why don't you do like the H suggested and just bail
