Ratings for PLayers on Classic Teams

Just curious how you guys rate players for classic teams: Do you use the stats for that given year, or an average of stats around the time period the person played (eg. for a player in 1984, use 1984, 1983, and 1982 stats)?

Just curious because in a way I was almost thinking that for a classic team, the stats of that year (barring a perosn being injured) should be weighted most heavily if you wanted an accurate reproduction of the players performance that year. If a player had an off year, this should be reflected when you play the game, even if the player was awesome the rest of his career.

The ratings are generated when the player/team is read into MVPEDIt tool from the Lahman db. Therefore, the player will play up, or down, to his abilities for that year. It is not predicated on the career stats of the player.

sometimes there is some minor tweaking. but as capa mentioned the abilities are based much on the year the player had for the classic team

Thanks. I figured that was the most realistic way to rate a player since if he had a bad yearthat season, this should be reflected in the historic team.
