RichK
wow this looks absolutely amazing! total geekout! i skimmed the thread so forgive me: is it straight html or does it require a db, say for putting it online? Straight HTML. You can enter your server location and it will change the links relative to that.
RichK
Man.... I wish I had some money to donate, I wanna mess around with this and my xbox dynasty. It will be released in the near future to the public. I'm still adding features and tweaking and trying to decide how I want to release it... My choices are 1) Full release (free w/ donations) 2) Basic release w/ customizations for donations 3) Limited (shareware) release 4) Full pay version. I've got a lot of time invested in this. So I don't know what to do. Post comments over on my board.
five
Most (all) mods are done for free. Just ask for donations, that would be my recommendation. Just look at MVPedit, it's an awesome program for MVP and RG just asks for donations. I wouldn't mind some kind of banner on the download (if you don't donate), but have the full arsenal of options for both versions. If that makes any sense, I'm tired. I agree, make both the donation and free ones fully capable. Do like Download Accelerator Plus on the free one. Have a banner running across the top that can't be disabled. Then take that out of the one that people donate for.
spitoon
I can certainly appreciate the time and effort involved in something like this. My mods are relatively simple compared to this and the most recent one took a very long time to complete. Having said that, I'd still steer away from charging for it per se. A donation system should yeild significant $'s and would be more in line with the whole modding idea. If anyone remembers DangerZ's editor for the High Heat series, he did the donation thing. I found that I was using it regularly so I made donations.

Friedman
I agree also. That's what MVPMODS is all about: Providing great mods of a game the sucks without mods for free. When the first release comes out, and if I'm satisfied with it (and i'm sure I will be) then I will donate. But not before.
CaptainSpooge
IMHO, you'll probably find that you'll make more money if you just ask for donations instead of actually charging for the program because what will happen is people will download it and they'll see how great it is and how much they use it and they'll make a donation whereas if you charge for it up front it will turn a lot of people off to even using it and you'll get no money from them at all. And I agree with what's been said already, release the full featured version with a banner or banners on it so people can get a true feel for the program and what it can do and then when someone donates you can provide them with a key to remove the banner(s) or just provide them a version without the banner(s). Just my thoughts.
frankynaky
I think you should distribute portions of your program according to peoples reservation prices. What i mean by this is that for the basic version of you program you should put it out in the downlaod section of MVPMods free, and ask for donations. But if you have Advanced features (what ever those may be), and knowing that it is unlikely that there will be any substitutes to such features, you should charge for those additional advanced features. With the free portion of your program you will capture everyones interest, however, some peoples interest will be more intese than others. Those whose interests is more intense will most likely be willing to "pay" more for advance features, than those who have less interests, as there reservation price is higher (I.E. what they are willing to pay for a commodity "your program"). In conclusion, if you do this you will capture both the market of the "supposive broke people" who will only donate the few dollars they can muster, and the market of those who "actually get off their *** and work" and who would be more willing/able to pay for advanced features. I'm majoring in economics at the University of British Columbia and this is the best advice i can give you!! PS - sorry for calling broke people, lazy asses, but hey!, most of the people in this community live in two of the richest nations in the world (Canada and the US) and if you cant find a job that is sad. I mean if you where from Africa or another third world country i would understand (cause those people are the only ones who can claim to be broke), but i doubt most of you are! And please dont blame George Bush's domestic policies for not finding a job, because the Unemployment rate is still hovering around 7%, which is really good compared to the rest of the world. CaptainSpooge
I think making two different versions, a full featured one and a stripped down one, would be a lot more work than it would be worth for the couple extra bucks that MIGHT be made.
spitoon
In the past, someone had mentioned that there might be potential legal issues with EA if you try to charge for an app that has anything to do with their product. Donations are fine, but there may be a problem if you charge for it and they find out. Just something to think about....Due Diligence.
RichK
Fair enough. Thanks for your input guys. MVPSavReader will remain free. I continue my work on 0.2.0 and I'm re-visiting the editing issue. There has to be a way to crack the encryption. - Rich
edm
Thats good to hear Rich. I think you've made the right choice. This makes we want to donate more so you don't feel you made the wrong decision. I'm just holding off until I can try it. Looking forward to public release! keep up the great work and thanks.

greenawayj
Rich-- Is there a problem with your board? I registered last night (Actually twice--by accident) and haven't received either password yet. I'm going to try with a different email address momentarily, just in case the problem is with my ISP. I'm not in that much of a rush to post, but want to let you know. sharpmath
I have to say I was/am very much looking forward to this utility, especially since I've decided to plug in all the ratings into a spread-sheet to devise a way for me to rate my players to make selections without relying on the 'Overall' talent. I wasn't really planning on donating until the product came out, but your decision to keep the tool as free release was pretty much all the reason I needed to go ahead and make a donation. Considering how much I think I'll use it, it will probably be the better twenty dollars I can spend. So thanks, and thanks for keeping it free! PirateFan13
Is tonight the night RichK? The suspense is far greater than waiting for the game itself to come out. I check this site all night with hopes that Saint Nick has wriggled down the chimney and dropped the new 2005 .sav reader under my computer. I can't wait Rich, I am so happy you took on such a daunting task. Thanks again... I will be anxiously waiting. PirateFan13
sharpmath
First off, I love the reader so far, and have used it lots already to shore up the information in my spreadsheets. Just wondering what the possibility is that the Individual Pitch Ratings are somewhere in the file and can be extracted to the reader? For example, a pitcher may have a 2-Seam Fastball rated at 67. But the actual ratings for it are 50-Movement, 58-Control, 86-Velocity, and that is what the Save Reader and MVPEdit show. I would be interested in having the final pitch rating shown (as it does on the player info in the game) as it would fit nicely into the spreadsheets I'm doing to evaluate my players. If this can't be done, does anyone know the calculation that is used to get the final pitch rating? I'm quite certain the formulation varies from pitch to pitch, but have had no success trying to figure it out. It would make for a more clunky spreadsheet, but if I could at least get the formulation for the final pitch rating, it could kind-of-work. Thanks! hh20xxconvert
This mod sounds like it will improve greatly the biggest shortcoming of the MVP program----stats and displays. Thanks in advance for this great project. One question as an MVP newbie---will the mod track all stats for a player? For example, if a marginal player bounces between the majors and AAA in the same season, will the mod track stats for that player in both leagues? Just the majors? Just the league he finished the season in? Thanks again for the mod. Please include a non PayPal method for donations.

I don't know the calculation, but I assume that it's something that's generated by MVP Baseball itself. If anybody figures it out, I'd like to know (along with the player overall rating-bar thing). - Rich
