Random Thoughts On A Sunday Morning Updated To 11-24
MarkB replied to Yankee4Life's topic in Left Field (Off-Topic)
Random thoughts on a Sunday evening; Damn, it's hot. I think this is the warmest it's been all year - it hit 29°c in my room earlier. It's now down to 26°c, but that's still 4°c over the normal temperature. Add to that some serious tension from the Thunder game, setting this new PC up in it's new home (it's rather large and heavy, for some reason) and the fact that we can't open any windows without being infested by flies means that I've spent most of the day sweating like a marathon runner. Well, rather that than being too cold, I guess. Why is it that some baseball games just have that effect of draining all of your energy? Too many highs and lows to keep track of, and I just end up tired as all hell after the game - like I am now. And I still have a Linux distro to test on this PC. If anyone's ever seen the film "Sphere" with Sharon Stone, Samuel L. Jackson and Dustin Hoffman, you should check out the book as well. I read around two-thirds of it yesterday (346 pages out of 500) before succumbing to tiredness, and I'll probably have finished it before going to sleep tonight. It's written by Michael Crichton and is ISBN number 0-330-30127-6. "Black Ice" by Matt Dickinson is pretty good as well, although I'm only 64 pages into that. That's ISBN 0-09-179521-4. For any hip-hop fans, check out Ice Cube's new album, "Laugh Now, Cry Later". It's the best album I've heard this year. It's good to hear some lyrics that make sense and have good points or feelings behind them rather than the usual breed of crap that's being released as hip-hop today. Good to see ThePirateBay.org back up again, with a new image taking a shot at Hollywood. It's a shame that these morons are still getting away with attempting to close down these websites. Anyone know where to get one of those brain implants that removes the need to sleep? Hook me up with a link. Have a good week. :) -

My tip of the day - never underestimate trashing. I went downstairs to throw some trash out earlier and saw one of my neighbours had thrown away a PC. An actual PC! Brought it upstairs, flipped it on using some old power cables and a monitor from 1996, and it seems the only reason for them throwing it out is that it was missing 2 files, for whatever reason - Command.com and Win.com. Installed them using a Windows 98 bootdisk and a Windows 98 SE CD, and what do I have now? A perfectly good Windows 98 box. And all their data was still on the disk, too. Ignorance is bliss. Hope everyone had a good weekend. :) -
Oh well. If only MVP had the back-end of High Heat, it would be damn near perfect. Thanks anyway Ty.
-
Cool, thanks. I don't think I'll do this. I would have to find it in memory to be able to do this.
-
Shame on you, KC! 8O Treachery! He's an into music thief. My latest. Not made one in a while, now that I think of it. His new album is the best album from anyone in quite a while. Hip hop today is lost. :(

Yeah, that could be cool. "0 runs, 0 hits, 0 errors. Pitches thrown: 14." Something like that? Although it might have to be split if the pitcher is replaced mid-inning...which I just remembered can't be done. A few brainstorms on the latest version from the 31st (hadn't tried it until just now): The new boxscore.css file is good. I like the grey. At the end of the file, there was a final line of "0 runs 0 hits" after the top of the 9th. The home team was leading, hence, no bottom of the 9th. I'm assuming that's what's caused the extra linescore to be added. EDIT - See here. As I was discussing wind earlier, this came into my head while playing. Could the wind speed and direction be grabbed from memory as well and placed in the output page? Maybe an extended information section with wind speed and direction, location of game (if the active stadium is yankday.big, for example, it could display just Yankee Stadium - 1:05pm, or if it's night, Yankee Stadium - 7:05pm. Or, if you don't want to create all the necessary IF statements (I know I wouldn't ), even just the stadium name, then the user can amend it later. When outputting, I was slightly confused with the X and H idea. I tried inputting "XH" to represent an exhibition game with the home stats, but got the pre-programmed error, so it meant loading the program twice. How about a variable, so that various options could be selected in one shot, so, for example, XHKY would result in an exhibition game, home stats page, krawhitham's layout and player links to MVPSavReader, while XRNN would result in an exhibition game, road stats page, neojonas' layout and no player links. In a few cases, I'll insert a bench player to pinch-run for my catcher, if he gets on base. With the latest build, it shows the starting catcher, then the replacement catcher (nice indent ) as the PH. Could the pinch-runner be shown between both to represent him in some way, possibly listing him as the PH and leaving his batting stats blank as he didn't have an at-bat? Could the player's fielding positions be shown in the Fielding section as well as, or instead of, in the batting section, and maybe sorted in some way? Could errors be added to the half-inning linescores, and the titles of the half-innings bolded? That's enough, for now. Thanks! EDIT - Also, the new pitching columnwith boxscore.css seems rather thin - Hughes' had to stretch to fit it, as you can see.
-
If this can be done, an inning-by-inning pitch count would also be a nice feature.
-
Sounds good.

Could a file check be implemented to ensure the destination file doesn't already exist? I'm more of an exhibition player right now, so, for example, all my games with Trenton will automatically be named TRE143.htm and TRE143.csv and it will overwrite without confirmation as soon as the appropriate input is given. Just as well I made a copy of that first file. I love this program. First game (Reading @ Trenton) is here. After the game, I'll spend a few minutes updating the file with pertinent information (pitching, defensive and offensive changes, fielder's choice outs, stolen bases etc.) and then I'll update the links and upload. Try out the "Previous" and "Next" links. Thanks for a great program Ty, and neojonas for a very nice HTML base.
-
I didn't, as I was using LocLook to check the abbreviation for the teams in the FEENG.LOC file. Maybe you could run an "if" statement to check if the team abbreviation is "CON" or "NOW" and link to the appropriate image and team name in the HTML file.

No problem. I don't think the All-Star team logos have been announced yet. I had a look on MLB Pressbox and it's only the event logos and uniform patches etc. that have been uploaded already. I'll keep my eyes open. EDIT - Very minor error I just noticed - On the losing pitcher just under the linescore, the record bracket isn't closed, so it will read "W: T.J. Beam (1-0) | L: Brian Mazone (0-1".
-
Place this with the rest of your logos. All 90 teams done. :)
-
Updated the above post. Only the AA Barons are missing now as MiLB doesn't have a logo for them. I'll update again with that one.
-
onewaydown, thanks, I forgot about that. I've saved the images, I'll post an update in a few minutes.
-
Done. The .ZIP file attached contains logos for 69 of the minor league teams in the game. The missing teams as as follows; AAA Scranton/W-B Red Barons (SWB) Buffalo Bisons (BUF) Ottawa Lynx (OTT) Syracuse SkyChiefs (SYR) Charlotte Knights (CHA) Indianapolis Indians (IND) Louisville Bats (LOU) Iowa Cubs (IOW) Omaha Royals (OMA) Memphis Redbirds (MEM) Colorado Springs SkySox (CS) Las Vegas 51's (LV) Tucson Sidewinders (TUC) AA Birmingham Barons (BIR) Midland Rockhounds (MID) San Antonio Missions (SA) A Visilia Oaks (VIS) High Desert Mavericks (HD) Brevard County Manatees (BC) Dunedin Blue Jays (DUN) Sarasota Reds (SAR) I'll get these done either later tonight or tomorrow. EDIT - Updated file now contains 89 images for all minor league clubs in the game except the Birmingham Barons.
-
tebjr, indeed, they are. The Clippers are also CLS. I'll have most of these done within the next half hour.
-
Ty, what acronyms are you using for team names? There are a few that collide, such as the Colorado Rockies and Columbus Clippers (both COL) and the Portland Sea Dogs and Portland Beavers (both POR). Would it help if I arranged them into levels and sub-folders, so seperate folders for AAA, AA and A?

Things like this make me wonder why I haven't switched to Linux yet. Typical Microsoft. Maybe if they paid as much attention to decent security as they do to their marketing campaign (or their court fees for anti-competitiveness cases, for that matter), users wouldn't have this crap. Oh well. I'll get more logos uploaded soon.
-
Yeah, makes sense. If only MVP stored game details better. Oh well. Thanks anyway. Your mods recently are bringing a whole new element to the game. EDIT - Attached AA Eastern League graphics, all 100x100. I had to name the Connecticut Defenders logo CD.gif. For some reason, XP insists there is already a file named CON.gif in every single directory on my PC, which I can't quite figure out. EDIT 2 - Replaced with all AA logos but 3 - Birmingham Barons are missing from the Southern League, Midland Rockhounds and San Antonio Missions are missing from the Texas League. Example page here. Would logos for the rest of the minors be any good to you?

I love this pogram. Just had probably the best game I've ever had. Anyway; Ty, in the bottom of the 10th inning, Felix Escalona doubled with no outs and Kevin Howard was intentionally walked to put men on 1st and 2nd. I attempted to bunt them over with Justin Christian, but it was a decent bunt and the catcher ended up eating the ball, but tossed it back to the pitcher who was standing just a few feet away from him. However, the boxscore has listed it as the runner making the 3rd out, which is damn near impossible as there was no outs in the inning when the play occured. I've copied the boxscore below. Bottom of inning 10 Felix Escalona doubled. Kevin Howard was intentionally walked. Justin Christian did not complete plate appearance (runner was the 3rd out) Vince Faison struck out. Todd Self flied out. Gabe Lopez hit into a fielder's choice. 0 runs, 1 hits Thanks. :D

Sweet, thanks Ty. :D

I just tried it for the first time and it's great. A few things I noticed; Agreed with snepp, it does make things a little hard to read. Something like the format boxscorers use, where the line would be, for example, "Alex Rodriguez singles (19), Derek Jeter to 3rd" in the inning-by-inning run-down would be nicer, I think. Or maybe a section at the end for season totals. Just randomly brainstorming here. In the game, I had a situation where I had flied out, singled, flied out again and singled again, bringing up Randy Ruiz with 2 out and 2 on. He grounded into a force out at second base, but the recap said "Randy Ruiz reached base on a fielder's choice." I was impressed with the fact it picked this up, but again, something like "Randy Ruiz grounds into force out, [player name] out at [base]" would be nice, or even just "Randy Ruiz grounds into force out" would be cool as it implies the inning was ended anyway. Finally, and again, I was impressed with this being picked up, with Justin Christian at 3rd base with 2 out and Gabe Lopez at the plate, I tried to pull a squeeze to drive in a run, with Gabe being a good bunter and Christian being very fast. Well, Gabe totally missed the bunt and Justin was out by a mile at home, ending the game. I had no idea what the recap would say about this, but it dealt with it very nicely. 1 question - what's the difference between the home team export and the road team? I had a look, but I couldn't see anything. Is it just for archival purposes, with the game number in the filename? Anyway, great job, ty. Looking forward to a final! :D
-
Excellent, that looks great! :D

Even a white background would be fine, but as it's not specified, HTML reverts to the default colour which is based on the primary graphics used by the OS. In my case, that's black, so I have a black background with red text and white logos. Also, the white background colour rollover on the stats only occurs when the row has been rolled over, so as you can see from the screenshot below, it's black and red until rolled over, then it goes white after it's been rolled over. If that doesn't make sense (I can see how it can't ), try changing your display options to High Contrast or something similar and load the page.
-
I'll be trying this later on, it looks great. The HTML output could use a real background color, though, as opposed to being set to default. It would look much better. :)
