No problem. That's the only way I stroke text, it's the easiest in my opinion.

I made a new layer below the text layer, alpha to slection on the text and grow it by whatever you want, on the other layer, do a bucket fill with whatever color you want, and tadah!It's stroked.

Yeah, I don't really like the BG and I think it's too red, other wise I like it.
