I was looking into importing as well, and the easiest way may be the ASCII format that MVP uses for their files, which is the same as the files MVPEdit uses for the team/player import. Being able to create those files means easier importing into MVPEdit. It shouldn't be too hard to figure it out, since by definition MVPEdit already did, and from visual inspection, the only part I'm not sure about is their 'unique ID' (the hex one). I don't know what degree of freedom we have with those, but if that's the worst part, it should handle well. And, it gives us the benefit of making it a lot easier to import career/year-by-year stats, including minor league numbers, assuming they're available and handy.

I started a dynasty and simmed a month with no issue. Then, I tried a game, but it crashed because I didn't 'fix' the Phillies with the 900-series cyberfaces. There's probably a few more things that need to be done, but the rosters seem to be working now.
-
Well, just to make it official, I changed the cyberfaces for two teams to the 901-915 series, and it worked from that point forward. So, what you should do is keep cyberfaces in the 901-915 range until you've collected the cyberfaces and assigned their IDs. Personally, I'd keep the graphics stuff until the end, but it's your mod. Just keep backups of your work, so you can revert back to a previous copy if something goes wrong.
-
Yea, I came to the same conclusion, which is why I moved player faces to the 900 series, and it seems to work. Now, after running it on the test mbe, I'll try global editing them on the original. If that fixes the problem, we'll know how to fix it. EDIT: Aw, guess I can't globally edit face IDs. I'll do two teams by hand then, see if it solves the problem. That's what's hard with editing someone else's work... you don't know all the circumstantial stuff like what faces are installed.
-
Just to add more info, I loaded the MVPEdit file and tried to export them directly. Didn't work. So, I took a single team, transferred it to a fresh file, and it still crashed. I also tried zeroing out the audio/photo IDs, but didn't help. And, I could start a dynasty, sim or manage games, or run a HR derby, but playing a game made it crash. I don't know all the intricacies of the game, but I still think it's some doubled up IDs, or referring to something that doesn't exist. (I exported it to a clean 05 version.) ...which might be the case. I set their faces to the 900-series, and that seems to have fixed the issue. Let me global edit the original mbe, see if that'll run in game... EDIT: Finishing a sentence.
-
I'll try a thing or two later tonight. For some reason, the .mbe file is almost twice the size it should be.
-
How much work did you complete in them? I'm debating if trying to export your players to a file, start fresh, then reimport them would solve the problem. It seems things have corrupted beyond the point that it's easily fixable.
-
How did you create the rosters, using MVPEdit or modifying the datafiles by hand?
-
What method are you currently using anyway? Lansing never had an extreme season, but the results are too high to tie to statistical anomaly. For vsL/vsR splits, the recommended method is taking actual splits (I use Retrosheet data to help automate it), and regress them to the mean of all players of the same hand. I'd have to check The Book, but I think righties need 2200 vsL AB of regression added on, lefties somewhere in the the thousands, and switch hitters at 600. I've already implemented it in my classics projection engine, of which I showed a sample three posts ago. EDIT: Grammar, specification

A month ago, I was working on a stat engine to make projections to make a total minors total classics roster. It's still in the beta phase, but it should be able to easily create organizational rosters... It's still set up to project 1999, but it shouldn't be hard to tweak one year. Here's a sample for Cards hitters, if you're interested. Drew's stats are weird, because of his short minor league stint. I'm happy it gave him good hitting stats, and we can tweak his playing time later.

Don't worry, conflict is good. If no one agrees, nothing ever gets better. The stir was because of me, anyway. If you're writing the mod, then you should choose the method. I, as well as others have made some suggestions on how you can tackle some of these issues, but ultimately, it's up to you. There was a similar debate on another forum on whether a season replay should really try to recreate everything or try to ignore what actually happened and try to rebuild it from what we knew at the time. Say you have a .500 team, but their bullpen has a great season, and has three sub-2.00 ERA guys, and they bring that team to the WS. If we try to recreate that team, then their bullpen will actually be rated as great, not lucky, so they'll usually make the WS. But what if you took how the teams looked before the season started, then replayed? Then their bullpen could break out again, or someone else could happen, say someone could give an MVP performance and push their team over... If you already know what the answer should be, why replay it? Regardless, if you need roster help, I can assist in the stats. I've been looking for a classic mod to apply my material to.

I see your point. I've been lurking for years, so I know exactly what you're talking about. But it seems my techniques would be better in Total Minors Total Classics. Of course I can't make one of those myself, so I need to assist people on an ongoing mod. Hence the replying to '99 mod. Nominally, this would be most useful for the 2009 rosters, but my projections are nothing compared to PECOTA, ZiPS, CHONEs, and all the other projection algorithms named after token third basemen. And, until I see how KG or other roster modders run things, I can't propose changes or scripts. So, I'll just pull back and run my research on empirical ratings. Preliminary results were interesting... I'll post when I have more info.

I know what you mean. I know there's a lot of people who come here demanding things. I was not trying to be one of them. I just know modders won't be taken seriously until they get results, but because my skills are stat-based, I can't just make quick demo mods. Doesn't work that way. I apologize if I've seemed arrogant or demanding, but I've worked in other sims, and I was trying to steer people away from problems I've run into before. I understand not many people here are sabermetrically inclined, but pushing new theories without proof isn't helping my cause. So, guess my best bet is to withdraw and so some research on something else for the time being. I've been talking to people about a few things, so if you still think you want my assistance, contact me, and we can keep working on those.
